Here's what I'm up to:
- Working full-time on contract through June 30 as an online copy editor for Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada (CPA)
- Working as contributing editor to City Palate magazine, which I've been doing for many years
- Working on projects for the Vancouver Aquarium's #BePlasticWise campaign
- My travel feature about Parksville and Tofino is in City Palate's current issue (March-April)
- My travel feature on Okanagan wine country will appear in the Palate's September-October issue
- A "Where Am I?" piece I wrote about the University of Calgary's microbiome lab is in U of C's spring magazine
I'm always up for new clients and assignments. A finalist for a National Magazine Award for a humour piece I wrote about barbecue competitions for Chatelaine magazine, I won the award for Best Magazine Food Feature Reporting from the U.S.-based Association of Food Journalists in 2006. My journalistic work, which includes humour, travel, food, wine, cocktail and arts features and columns, has appeared in the Globe and Mail, the National Post, the Vancouver Sun, the Province, the Montreal Gazette, the Winnipeg Free Press, the Calgary Herald, the Edmonton Journal, the Ottawa Citizen, MonteCristo, NUVO, Avenue magazine, Swerve, Chatelaine, Homemakers, Western Living, New Jersey Life, Up! (now Westjet magazine) and many other publications. I was the longtime monthly and bi-monthly humour columnist for Avenue, City Palate, Alberta Parent and Business Edge magazines, and the weekly humour columnist for the North Shore News for 12 years.
My corporate clients have included the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC), the City of Vancouver, the BC Cancer Agency, Doctors of BC, the Sauder School of Business, Capilano, Langara, and Simon Fraser universities, the University of Calgary, Swiss Re Insurance, Suncor Energy, PetroCanada, Exxon-Mobil, the Cookbook Company, Oakridge Centre and numerous other companies, non-profits and public sector organizations.
I offer energetic, accurate, succinct writing and a quick turnaround. In addition to news releases, newsletter articles and promotional materials, I have also written speaking notes and speeches for SFU academics and oil-patch spokespeople, an op-ed for a groundbreaking Vancouver doctor, video scripts for the City of Calgary's online site, and, for an American company, humorously provocative gift certificates for couples to exchange.
Newspaper, magazine and academic editing are additional skills. In recent years, my academic work has included editing two PhD theses and assorted op-eds and articles for International Relations students from Iran. I have also edited both a book and a PhD thesis about architecture for John Brown, a professor of architecture at the University of Calgary and principal at the revolutionary Calgary architecture firm Housebrand.
